Welcome to Your Learning Journey

Welcome to the Management and Leadership Development Programme, Level 1. This self-study guide has been designed specifically for the South African workplace context to help you build a strong foundation in management and leadership principles. Whether you are a new supervisor, an aspiring team leader, or a professional seeking to understand the fundamentals of leading others, this course will provide you with the essential knowledge and practical skills you need.

How to Use This Study Guide

This guide is structured into seven comprehensive modules, each designed to be completed at your own pace. We recommend spending approximately one to two weeks on each module, allowing time for reflection and application of the concepts in your workplace. Each module contains:

  • Learning outcomes that clearly state what you will achieve
  • Comprehensive content written in accessible language
  • Practical activities and exercises to reinforce learning
  • Case studies based on real South African workplace scenarios
  • Self-assessment questions to test your understanding
  • Key terms and definitions for quick reference

Learning Approach

This is a self-study programme, which means you are in control of your learning journey. Take time to read each section carefully, complete all activities honestly, and reflect on how the concepts apply to your own work situation. The most effective learning happens when you actively engage with the material rather than simply reading through it. Keep a learning journal to record your thoughts, insights, and action plans throughout the course.

South African Context

Throughout this programme, you will notice a strong emphasis on the South African legislative framework and workplace context. South Africa has a comprehensive set of labour laws designed to protect workers’ rights and promote fair labour practices. As a manager or leader, understanding these laws is not optional – it is essential for effective and lawful leadership. We reference key legislation including the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act 75 of 1997, and the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, among others.
